The largest federal construction procurement agency outside the Department of Transportation, GSA has established a new position in the course of transferring the Office of Federal High-Performance Green Buildings from Public Buildings Service to Governmentwide Policy. Commenting on the appointment of agency veteran Kevin Kampschroer as chief greening officer, GSA Commissioner of Public Buildings Robert Peck said, [He] will deliver our goal of becoming a ÎGreen Proving GroundÌ for the American building industry by measuring the cost-, resource- and greenhouse gas-reduction effectiveness of myriad innovative green design, construction, and management approaches.
GSA Administrator Martha Johnson emphasizes that her agency is better positioned to provide federal agencies with the necessary measurement tools and policies they need to meet their own sustainability mandates, adding that the chief greening officer will aggressively pursue sustainable practices within GSA’s portfolio of [1,500] owned and [8,000] leased buildings. Kampschroer’s appointment and related measures stem from President Obama’s October 2009 executive order calling on the federal government to lead by example in greening and modernizing the nation’s infrastructure, she adds.
